Right section? :slant:

Hey guys, I've had SBC Yahoo! DSL for a few months now, and everytime I receive a call or make a call, the DSL disconnects and becomes unusable until the phone is free. My home phone line is shared with the DSL line. I have a filter on every phone in the house, including the modem. I've called tech support, but their support is pretty bad. They said it was SP2, but I don't think that's it...

I have an alarm system in my house, and I heard they could interfere with the connection... could that be it?

I use a lot of phone splitters, could that be a problem?
For example: phone jack --> DSL filter --> phone splitter --> branches off to 2 phones

They told me to call SBC and get the phone line checked out, but I think you have to pay for that. I'm going to do that, but does anyone here know the problem first? Has this happened to anyone else before?

Thanks :)

Your splitters could be a real issue... but it's more than likely a faulty filter.

When the phone is in use, the voltage on the line changes, the filter stops the DSL line being affected by that change. I've had friends who have had the same issues, and it turned out being the filter the past few times.

Also, overloading the line from the filter with too many phones causes degredation as the voltage is split between the phones.

Okay here's what I've tried...

1. Disconnected all phones, plugged the modem directly into the wall with no filter, called my house with my cell phone. Did not disconnect (internet also seemed a little faster)

2. Plugged one phone into the wall with a filter, plugged the modem directly into the wall with no filter, called my house with my cell phone. DISCONNECTED

3. Tried same process as #2 on a different jack and different phone and different filter. DISCONNECTED

4. Tried same process as #2 but with filter on modem. DISCONNECTED

:(

BTW, I can hear static when I use my phone.

Anyone know how to put a filter on the alarm?

Seems as though the voltage to your line is fluctuating...probably means there is an issue with the connection to your house sorry.

If it isn't internal wiring (say a short in one of the wall boxes) then you'll have to get the phone company out :(

Check this out, I saw this from a Google ad! :D

DSL Filter for Residential Alarm Systems. The video is also pretty informative. Do I need one of these?

I have this problem to and its really pissing me off. I noticed that it only disconnects
when you pick up the phone. If you dont pick up the phone it wont disconnect you.
At least this is whats happenening to me. Plus I dont have any alarm systems so it
should be ok. The only thing is that the phone cable connecting my modem to the wall
is really really long. Like 10 meters. Could that be a problem ? I know USB cables
can only go for like 5 meters.

Ethernet cable's maximum length is 100 meters, so no, that's not your problem.

I used to have SBC DSL and it always worked perfectly fine. I never got disconnected, even on long conversations (my mom usually talks for hours...). I had filters on all phones and I had an alarm system.

I don't know why you're getting disconnected but you should bug the hell out of Ameritech (I presume its Ameritech since they operate under SBC) until they either: 1) Come and fix it, or 2) Send you new equipment and a manual on how to do it yourself.

Good luck! :)

Well I tried to put a standard filter on the alarm, but the cable on the alarm is like a fat ethernet type one... :/ Even when I completely unplugged it, the internet still worked and still disconnected when the phone was lifter....

Okay well sorry to bring this topic back, but I didn't really fix my problem yet.

I called SBC, but they said they would charge me if it was a problem on my end, not theirs. So I tested the line by plugging in a standard phone into the telephone box outside on the side of my house. It seemed to be fine, there was no static like how their is when I talk from inside my house. So would that mean it's a problem on my end?

Then I tried putting a filter on the telephone box outside on the side of my house, and that fixed my problems. There was no static when I used the phone, and the internet didn't disconnect when I used the phone! :D Now there was a new problem, however. My connection was dramatically slowed down. Looking at my modem configuration page, it said it was connected at...

320 Kbps (downstream), 192 Kbps (upstream)

but it should have been connected at... :slant:

1536 Kbps (downstream), 384 Kbps (upstream)

So is there supposed to be a filter on the box outside or not?

Thanks

I'm sorry to bump this old thread but I was wondering if the OP or anyone else could tell me the solution to this problem.

I found this page through a Google search(Hence my first post). I know this post is over 2 years old but I'm sure someone must have come across this problem again.

Thanks for any help guys.

that happen in to my friend's pc
that everytime we use their phone or someone called the dsl was always disconnects
or for sometime the connection is very slow..
we all get pissed off if that happened, and we scolded the customer service
and i dont think the problem is in the pc or in what splitter use.t is n their system of DSL
and thats for sure...
anyway you should call for customer service or a technician so that it will be
fix as soon as posible...!
