Avedesk Hints & Tips

7 posts in this topic

I'm getting spammed with questions in my mailbox, so maybe it's a good idea to make a Hints & Tips topic. If not, I'll trash it ;)

Why do my labels keep returning to the filename when using the shortcut, drive or folder desklet?

There is an option to automatically update the foldername on rename for these desklets. You need to disable that option.

See this screenshot too.

When I use My label disappears!

It's probably because you tried to use a Type1 font. Type1 fonts are not supported by AveDesk1.1. Try to use a different, similiarly looking font. For example, Lucida Sans Unicode is similiar to LucidaMAC.

How do I make a shortcut to ?

In the Shortcut Desklet, you can use own of these links in the path field. Note that a link to My Computer is Shell:driveFolder

shell:Common Administrative Tools
shell:Administrative Tools
shell:SystemX86
shell:My Pictures

shell:Desktop
shell:Fonts
shell:ConnectionsFolder
shell:RecycleBinFolder
shell:PrintersFolder
shell:ControlPanelFolder
shell:InternetFolder
shell:DriveFolder
shell:NetworkFolder
shell:DesktopFolder

Where can I find more desklets?

  • DockEx
  • Wincustomize (in the ObjectDock section).
  • In this forum. I will regularly post updates or new desklets here too.

Note that AveDesk1.1 is compatible with Object Dock docklets. You can simply create a folder named 'Docklets' in the AveDesk-rootfolder, and place OD-docklets there.

What's up with the Effects?

There are two varieties with AveDesk 1.1:

1. Effects.

Mainly a Visual C++ written DLL that exports a set of defined functions

and responds to them. The SDK is available at www.dockex.com. Requires some C/C++ knowledge.

This is the variety that Alilm has chosen.

2. EffectLets. (Effect + ScriptLet = EffectLet)

Mainly a XML file that contains some script code and responds to the same set of

'events'; Requires notepad.exe to develop. A SDK is not available yet but if you

can read / understand the available effectlets, you can start coding in vbScript

or JavaScript right away. HTML coders should feel at home already.

Beware that XML has some differencies to HTML - if internet explorer loads the

file without parse errors, its likely that AveDesk will accept it.

This is the variety of choice for folks not knee deep in programming.

Is the Aveapps still under development? I would like to try some of the apps but I don't want to install them if they are not being actively maintained.

Any help would be welcomed.
