I think the only way is to change the shortucut icons to transparent ones.

classic menu?

you'll need to reshack shell32.dll to change the icons. unfortunately, the icons are used all over the system, and not just in the menu. you'll end up with some transparent icons in unexpected places.

if you're using the new start menu, there are registry entries: http://virtualplasti...rt.html#xppanel

also, you could try modding the msstyles file itself, and change the margins and alignment. it could work, but i don't guarantee it.

oh, if it's classic menu, then i don't think changing start menu values will have any effect on it.

The best way to do it would be to use a taskbar replacement program like ObjectBar. In fact, the new Tiger bar from Magbi9 and peteross (click here) already has an icon-free Start Menu. :)

You could use a small app: xBar by methodik to hide the start menu and use another small app: ShortPopUp to replace the start menu.
Set ShortPopUp to only display titles and there you go.

You could also try an alternative shell to replace the taskbar/startmenu combo.

If you really want to change how Windows looks, you'll have to get a little dirty at times.

find what?

xbar will hide parts of the taskbar, and shortpopup will give you the menu, but it won't look like the xp menu.

if you're looking for alternative shells, well, you'll find lots.

read up.

litestep is probably the most flexible. you should be able to come up with a theme to replace explorer, but has the look you want.

it seems like overkill, though, just to get rid of the icons.
