Hi,

Maybe I missed some post describing this, but...

Maybe it is possible to make a regular Shortcut Desklet pointing on a CD drive to change its icon into the one that a CD is labeled with.

I mean the type as regular Windows Shortcut to a drive moved from My Computer and droped on the desktop.
ex. when I insert a CD of CHIP Magazine the regular Windows Icon changes its apperiance into CHIP magazines logo. But the windows icon do not have Panther label, of course.

My point is to have such changing shortcut, but with those beautiful Panther labels of Averdesk.

In the picture below you can see that the Windows icon (left) changed and its description did NOT, but Avedesk desklet (right) did not change, but it changed its description.

Gordian knot, or what ?

Thanks in advance for help.

It probably needs to be coded into the desklet.

for now the desklets like powdermount and mountchecker can not doo this kind of things...
to do thins you'll need to recognize if there is a custom icon in the autorun, and display it... this is not done yet.
I don't think's it's a good idea to code this feature cause the icon would be crapy :( but something i suggested to Ave:
- For each storage media (CD, usbkey, hd) there is an identifier (maybe you should do an hash or something) and with each identifier, add the possibility to attach a custom icon in state of the default, for example:
WindowsXP cd [hash: 0223456787638] => cdxp.png
photoshop cd [hash: 8980284798372] => cptoshop.png
....
default [hash: no] => cd.png

this could be great!!

Hi kerin,

thanks for the idea. But something is not quite clear. Namelly, where shoud I put this Hash to attach a custom icon in state of the default. Is it in the desklets' properties, path, or...?

The other thing is:
how to make a windows desktop icon have a coloured panther label?

Maybe you know this answer?

Yes I use Avedesk, but a link can be made just for an .exe file or a directory. If it is possible to link non-exe files , then I did somehow missed it, is it?

I think you can if you make a shortcut first...can you be more specific?

You can let it point to anything - it looks like it only accepts EXE-files, but that is my boo boo. Just type in the open dialog "*.*" (without the quotes) and hit enter.

*Fixed for 1.1

Maybe you know this answer?

i got answer for these two things :P

first, yeah the hash should be stored in a config file in the desklet directory or something like that. I'm talking about hash just because we need a unique identifier for each CDrom.... but maybe another way is more efficient :) this have to be coded... pffff if i had the skills it would be done cause it's something i requested when Andreas made the first MountChecker (that i requested as well) ;)

for the second thing, having colored labels on you desktop, of course you can use Avedesk but i agree this is very static... I've already requested also a desklet that would handle the files on the desktop (files in c:\Doc&setting\you\desktop\ folder) and would display them as a desklet element, alowing you to add colorized labels with more statistics (file size for example).
I dunno if it's possible... i guess it is :) and it'll be user transparent with avedesk 1.1 drag and drop feature :) this is very usefull... personnaly i use it very often!!!

as you can see, Avedesk has got a good development potential, it only need to find the crazyest coder to implements these crazy ideas ;)
I really would like to be able to do it by myself... but i only had bases in C++, and i don't have the required skills... fu** (see under my avatar....   )

anyway, andreas is making a damn crazy good work and i think we can not tell him "thanks" anougth cause all his app rox!!

Hi there,

One thing, first : you wrote as it sais in the quote : you personally use it vey often. Did you mean that you WOULD USE IT OFTEN, IF YOU COULD or you do it now

Now to the rest:

Sorry, I do not have a slightest idea about programming, so this about hash myst be clearer. Would you like to specify it ?? Please.

Now some words for AndreasV too:
First of all THANKS for the

It reacts on anything :D .

You really are THE BIG :smartass:

THE question is when the avedesk 1.1 version could be out ? Of what I heard it will be giving new amasing possibilities of customising.

The only thing to do for AndreasV in return for these nice docklets is - i guess - find good ideas for development .

Anyway I'll do my best.

 I said that it will be released soon, Andreas is doing some massive tests to eradicate all possible bugs. And Kerin writes in present tense because he's one of the betatesters and he already has avedesk 1.1.

Not for butting in, but AveDesk has this nice Layers feature, so I thought it could be no large issue to have PowderMount look at the AutoStart.inf and have the 16x16 or 32x32 Icon as an overlay to the CD icon...

Also there is the (somewhat remote but achievable) possibility to detect the type of media insterted, e.g. Data CD / Audio CD / VCD / DVD and have the Icon changed to reflect this - combined with the aforesaid layers feature it could be showing an empty case if its capable of reflecting the windows mediaarrival events...

Just an idea.

Hello herd,

I guess it should be explained what I aim to achieve with avedesk.

Step-by-step:

1. in Win98 times to see if there is a CD in a drive (and what kind - icon) I used the regular quick launch area with Windows CD icons that changed on CD insert.
(in this way I did not forget to remove CD from drives)

2. Now in WinXP time and with Avededes features I try to achieve the same effect, not in quick launch area, but on the desktop.
With Avedesk PowderChecker I discovered that if no disc in in the drive there is nothing on the desktop and if inserted a desklet appeares. I found this option very cool
:D

3. However, the image showed could only be that one assigned in desklets properties. I tried to ask in this forum how to get the CD assigned icon as desklets image or how to get a windows icon specific to a CD to have Panther label. So far I know it is not possible.

4. Talking about powderMount (as you suggested), I checket it and do not know how to use the AutoStart.inf feature. Anyway I starting to give up :(

5. My idea was not exactly to detect the type of media insterted, just the image & label in separate drives issue. For now the drives have PNGs assigned showing which drive is used, cause this is also what I want to achieve (see image)

Could you please explain more in details the thing:

to have PowderMount look at the AutoStart.inf and have the 16x16 or 32x32 Icon as an overlay to the CD icon...

Maybe this can be a solution, but I do not know how to use it step-by-step.

Thanks in advance

Sorry Jack_Surfer, but all my thoughts were addressed at desklet developers, especially at that advanced coder called ThePowderRanger, who made that eye watering PowderMount desklet. There's nothing you can do at the moment but wait until AndreasV or ThePowderRanger adopts this issue.

If you know a scripting language like vbscript or javascript, why not code a Desklet doing exactly what you want with my challenging "Scriptable Multimeter"? :D

I'm on it, but you should give the Scriptable Multimeter a try ^_^

Unfortunatelly I don't know anything about scripting, so it will be nothing from my side tallking about scripting.

However I have gone a bit around the problem.

AndreasV .avi-file with movie on Avedesk 1.1 inspired me so much that I've made the solution the other way around. It's a bit complicated - I use 7 separate desklets, but it looks promissing (for my part at least). Judge it yourself. Maybe anyone else will find this an idea for a dosklet ? I understand, it will not be easy, cause everyone has a different drive configuration and probably not many has 3 CD drives, buy MAYBE

Probably I go forward to Avedesk 1.1 features, but anyway.
It works like that:
1. when no CD is inserted in any of the drives - the glossy spheres are slightly visible in somethin in a form of a panel,
2. if a CD is inserted the glossy shpere is covered by CD docklets PNG (in the example below - in the middle CD-R drive).

So, finally it went out for me something like that. Thanks for all comments, anyway.
