The Spotlight turns to notebooks.

Its official, Apple has planned a special event for October 14.

Did nobody else notice the word 'Spotlight'? Or am I just reading into it too much? What happened to the days when Apple really did put hints into thier invitations?

Apple Reveals New iPods, iTunes, and iPhone Firmware

It seems like only a few of the rumors surrounding Apple's next product release were true, but mostly accurate as well.

Probably the most anticipated moment of Apple's event today was the revealing of an all-new iPod nano - now taller, thinner, and available in 9 colors, as well as in 8/16GB. The new nano is encased in a more rounded all-aluminum and glass shell and implements an "enhanced UI". The device now incorporates an accelerometer, not unlike that in the iPhone and iPod Touch, that allows you to turn the device on its side to watch videos in widescreen format. Shaking the device puts the music in Shuffle mode. The nano starts at just $149 for the 8GB version.

The iPod Touch also received a makeover, with a seemingly smoother, tapered and thinner shell backed with chrome that can be seen as a rim from the front, like on the iPhone. It also has volume controls along the left side, and a built-in speaker. New software adds Nike+ features to the device. The new Touch is available in 8, 16, and 32 GB at 229, 299, and 399 dollars, respectively.

The iPod classic wasn't left out today, as it is now available only in 120GB, for $249.

The popular iTunes application is now at version 8. The updated program now implements Apple's new Genius technology, enables HD TV show downloads, and a new grid view that lets you scan your library's cover art in a more spaced-out view than Cover Flow.

iPhone Firmware 2.1 was also announced, and Steve Jobs states it should improve the battery life of your iPhone, as well as reduce crashes and eliminate bugs.

New Nano Leaks...?

I can't speak for everyone in the room, but I'm not all that excited about the possibility of the iPod nano returning to its long, skinny origins. Originally repulsed by the latest iteration of nano, the deformed, squat body won me over the first time I actually held it in my hand. And it instantly made the styling of its thin predecessor seem like a vanity device—a lipstick-like accessory, not something designed to easily play my music. Anyway, these concept mock-ups by flickr's Umpa reminded me that skinny is still pretty hot. Widen the screen a tad and I might be sold, again. Bonus shot:

You see, putting Wall-E on the screen makes the concept oh so much more convincing. And adorable.
